We moved from Iowa to Oregon after floods devastated our hometown. It was a hard move, but we don't regret it.
In 2008, after catastrophic flooding left parts of Iowa in ruins, my husband Adam and I took a leap of faith and relocated to Oregon. We chose Oregon for its reputation as a climate-resilient state, with its low risk on climate maps. The move was challenging, yet it became a transformative experience as we embraced the idea of being 'climate change movers.' Initially, we felt like pioneers, but as climate realities became more evident, we recognized our adventure as part of a growing narrative. Oregon’s changing environment, including increased wildfires and droughts, tested our resolve, but ultimately led us to invest deeply in our community and develop a sense of belonging. Our children flourish here, unbound by technology, as we navigate the complexities of modern life. Embracing the challenges has created roots that keep us connected, reminding us that although the air may be filled with uncertainty, we continue to breathe life and hope into our new home.
