USPS Halts Inbound Packages from China and Hong Kong
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has declared it will temporarily stop accepting inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong starting February 4, 2025. This measure does not impact letters or flat mail. The USPS's decision coincides with the introduction of a 10% tariff on imported goods from China by the US government, which prompted China to respond with its own tariffs. Notably, the removal of the de minimis exemption, which previously allowed small packages to arrive tariff-free, further complicates the landscape for e-commerce exporters like Shein and Temu, who previously benefited from this rule. As e-commerce shipments from these regions accounted for 67% of US-bound packages under this exemption from 2018-2021, the impact of these new tariffs and policy changes could be significant for international trade dynamics.
