Uber CEO Says Making Self-Driving Taxis Mainstream Will Take Longer Than Expected

In a recent statement during Uber's fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi made it clear that the integration of driverless cars into their rideshare service will take significantly longer than anticipated. He cited various challenges, including safety considerations and the complexity of scaling fleets of autonomous vehicles. While companies like Waymo are testing driverless cars in cities like Phoenix, Atlanta, and Austin, Khosrowshahi explained that many factors need to align before autonomous taxis are deemed reliable enough for widespread public use. He noted, 'Several pieces of the go-to-market puzzle still need to come together,' adding that companies must ensure that autonomous vehicles are substantially safer than human drivers to gain public trust. Furthermore, operational aspects such as charging, parking, and maintenance of these vehicles add more complexity to the rollout. As Khosrowshahi pointed out, autonomous vehicles often require multiple charges a day and extensive servicing due to their higher utilization rates, making the logistics of a large AV fleet fairly intricate. He concluded by stating, 'We think that the commercialization of the technology is going to take way, way longer.'
