Uber CEO Highlights Challenges in Making Self-Driving Taxis Commonplace

During a recent earnings call, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted that integrating self-driving cars into Uber's offerings will take considerable time. Challenges such as ensuring safety, managing parking, and maintaining the vehicles remain critical hurdles. While companies like Waymo and Tesla have pioneered driverless technology in select US cities, scaling this to a fleet capable of supporting Uber's vast passenger network is a complex task. Khosrowshahi stated, 'We think that the commercialization of the technology is going to take way, way longer.' In partnership with Waymo, Uber has begun deploying autonomous vehicles in Phoenix and plans to expand to Atlanta and Austin this year. Khosrowshahi highlights that these vehicles, as they operate significantly more miles than typical consumer vehicles, necessitate frequent maintenance and sufficient parking solutions when idle, complicating the rollout plans.
