Norwegian is Following Royal Caribbean's Giant Cruise Ship Playbook

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is embracing a bold strategy by announcing plans to launch four of its largest cruise ships beginning in 2030. The new Fincantieri-built vessels will each weigh approximately 226,000 gross tons and accommodate over 8,300 passengers, significantly surpassing the size of NCL's current flagship, Norwegian Encore, which can carry about 5,690 guests. This move aligns with the trend set by Royal Caribbean, known for its ambitious 'build bigger' approach that has seen the debut of record-breaking ships like the Icon of the Seas, which boasts a staggering 248,663 gross tons and unparalleled amenities. Increasing competition in the cruising market, highlighted by NCL's eight-ship order for its brands through 2029, underscores the industry's shift towards mega ships as floating resorts. With this strategic pivot, NCL aims to capture a larger share of the increasingly popular vacation-at-sea market.
