Nicolas Cage warns his fellow actors to protect themselves from AI
- Nicolas Cage used his Saturn Awards acceptance speech to rally against the use of AI in filmmaking.
- "I say, protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions," Cage, 61, said.
- The use of artificial intelligence in films has been controversial, and Hollywood seems divided.
Nicolas Cage, 61, has emerged as a vocal advocate for fellow actors, urging them to resist the incursions of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. After receiving the best actor award for his role in the dark comedy "Dream Scenario" at the 52nd annual Saturn Awards, he passionately addressed the audience about the looming dangers of AI in cinema.
"But there is another world that is also disturbing me," Cage noted, as reported by Variety. He cautioned against allowing AI to manipulate performances, insisting, "an inch will eventually become a mile, and all integrity, purity, and truth of art will be replaced by financial interests only." According to Cage, true art reflects the human condition—something he argues that AI simply cannot achieve. "If we let robots do that, it will lack all heart and eventually lose edge and turn to mush," he stated.
This emphasis on the preservation of artistic authenticity finds resonance in Hollywood's ongoing debates about AI, a subject that significantly fueled the recent 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which highlighted the industry's growing unease with the technology. Cage's alarming warning reflects a broader struggle within Hollywood, as dividing opinions emerge about how AI should play a role in the creative landscape.
