Guy Pearce on his ‘Memento’ performance: “I’m shit in that movie”
Guy Pearce has revealed he is not a fan of his performance in Memento, saying he thinks he was “shit” in the movie.
The actor plays Leonard Shelby in Christopher Nolan’s 2000 psychological thriller, a man who is suffering from amnesia and is unable to form new memories. He uses an elaborate system of photographs, notes and tattoos as he attempts to find his wife’s killer and the person responsible for his condition.
The film is beloved by many film fans, but in a new interview with the Times, Pearce has given his honest opinion on his own performance. “I’m having an existential crisis,” he said. “I watched Memento the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie.”
“I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&A of Memento earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did,” he added. “And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down. I know why I didn’t work with Chris again – it’s because I’m no good in Memento.”
Pearce recently expanded on the theory that a Warner Bros. executive has blocked him from working with Nolan for the last two decades in an interview with Vanity Fair. “He spoke to me about roles a few times over the years – the first Batman and The Prestige. But there was an executive at Warner Bros. who quite openly said to my agent, ‘I don’t get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to employ Guy Pearce,’” he said.
“So, in a way, that’s good to know. I mean, fair enough: there are some actors I don’t get. But it meant I could never work with Chris.”
Pearce has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars for his role in Brady Corbet’s historical epic The Brutalist. In a five-star review, NME wrote: “The Brutalist earns its title even when it’s being occasionally hilarious and the running time isn’t the only thing about it that will leave you emotionally wiped out by the finale. But even though Corbet probably does a bit too much to make his film come across as a masterpiece, it’s impossible not to think it also actually is.”
