A week on from his latest inspirational performance in a cricket World Cup final, Ben Stokes was experiencing another top-level sport.

Stokes, whose half-century against Pakistan in Melbourne steered England to T20 World Cup glory, has been a guest of Red Bull at this weekend’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, meeting world champion Max Verstappen and team principal Christian Horner.

Along with fellow England heroes Joe Root and Jimmy Anderson, who weren’t part of the T20 squad in Australia, he was interviewed on the grid by Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle ahead of the race.

The trio, along with the rest of the England team, are en route to Pakistan for England’s first Test series in the country since 2005. And they proved more approachable than Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who gave Brundle the cold shoulder during the grid walk.

Stokes, wearing a Red Bull cap and clutching a can of the renowned energy drink, said: “It must be nice for Max coming into the last race knowing he’s already won the championship. It’s my first Formula 1 [race], it’s been an amazing experience.”

“‘Go well’ is the expression I believe you like to use,” Brundle said to Anderson, England’s all-time Test wicket-taker, who replied: “We’re having a great time, it’s amazing.”

Suggesting he wasn’t a cricket fan, Brundle said all his sports “have engines”.

Root replied: “Speaking of engines, he’s [Anderson] been going for 20 years [Anderson made his Test debut back in 2003]. The former Test captain added: “We’re in a special place as a white ball team while Ben has come in [as Test captain] and led us extremely well throughout the summer.
