Several people have been buried after an avalanche took place on the Eiger, one of the world’s most iconic mountains. The avalanche struck around noon on May 17, according to BBC – see here for more.

The prompted a large-scale search and rescue effort, as teams raced to find people buried – it’s unknown how many people were involved. Officials have announced they’ve concluded their search and will release information later today.

The Bernese cantonal police announced the incident on Twitter, stating, “Shortly after noon, an avalanche hit the Eiger. Several people were buried. A major operation involving numerous rescue teams is underway. The search for people is ongoing. Further information will follow.”

The Eiger (3,697 m) is famous for its classic north face routes, which have drawn alpinists for over 100 years. It’s also popular for hikers and tourists thanks to its proximity to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. We’ll update the story once more information in provided.
